Early Outburst Pushes Saints Past McKendree 3-0

Box Score St. Louis - The Maryville women's soccer team burst out for three goals in just under 13 minutes and cruised to a 3-0 victory over visiting McKendree Friday afternoon in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both squads. The win was the second straight for Maryville by a 3-0 count.

Just four minutes into the game, Katy Rood turned from near the 18-yard box and blasted a rocket into the upper right corner for an early 1-0 advantage for the Saints. Maryville battled for a corner kick in the ninth minute of play with Rood playing the ball into the middle. The cross deflected off two McKendree defenders and into the Bearcats' net as the Saints doubled their lead on the own goal. The visitors nearly pulled one score back but Maryville keeper Bailey Doerflinger came up with consecutive saves to preserve the two-goal edge. In the 17th minute, the Saints struck again. Rood put a shot on goal that hit the cross bar and bounced back to the right edge. Shannon Foley settled the ball and lofted in a perfectly placed shot into the McKendree goal for a 3-0 lead. Doerflinger denied two good McKendree chances midway through the first half to keep the Bearcats off the board.

The Saints kept up the pressure in the second half. Ashley Pogue had two shots misfire wide, and Mariah Allen-Harris' attempt was saved. Amanda Wiechens, who created numerous scoring chances, nearly scored the fourth Saints goal but her shot was deflected high by Anna Sassman and hit the crossbar before going out of play. Doerflinger made four saves in posting her second shutout of the season.

The Saints, who have scored six goals and not surrendered a tally, improve to 2-0-1, 1-0-0 in the GLVC. McKendree drops to 1-3-0, 0-1-0 in the league. Maryville returns to the pitch Sunday as it welcomes Bellarmine in a Noon start.
