Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season to Bellarmine

Box Score St. Louis - The Maryville women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season as Bellarmine used two goals in the first half en route to a 2-0 over the Saints. Maryville falls to 2-1-1 overall, 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

In the 15th minute of play, the Knights pushed forward and Lexy Hazle lofted a cross from the left side of the field. Mary Beth Gorham made a run into the box and headed the ball into the Saints' net for a 1-0 lead. Ashley Pogue had Maryville's best scoring chance in the first half but she was stopped by BU keeper Hannah Poteet in the 36th minute. Just a minute later, Bellarmine found the net again as Katie Fernandez put a pass from Abby Janszen into the upper left corner for a 2-0 Knights lead.

The Saints were looking to get on the board in the 60th minute and earned back-to-back corner kicks but were unable to manufacture a goal. Amanda Wiechens tested Poteet but BU kept the Saints off the scoreboard. The Saints had two more shots in the final five minutes but the Knights did not surrender a score as the visitors improved to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the GLVC.

The Saints are next in action Friday, Sept. 19, as they take to the road to play at Illinois Springfield.
