Box Score Springfield, Ill. - Shannon Foley scored in the 55th minute of action to boost the Maryville women's soccer team to a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory at Illinois Springfield Friday evening. The shutout is the fourth of the season by the Saints defense.
UIS had the first good scoring chance of the night but Maryville keeper Bailey Doerflinger came up with the save. Two minutes later, Foley had the first shot for the Saints. Amanda Wiechens had a shot turned away near the midpoint of the half, and the Prairie Stars had two shots on goal late. Doerflinger stopped two attempts to keep the game scoreless after 45 minutes.
The Saints then tallied the game's only goal early in the second half. Ashley Pogue and Wiechens worked the ball forward and after the Saints stopped an attempted clearance, Foley found the ball and the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Saints tried to build their lead and had three good scoring chances but UIS goalie Paige Polonus kept Maryville off the scoreboard. The Prairie Stars battled and earned five corner kicks in the final half but the Saints defense held off the host squad. Doerflinger notched four saves to pick up her third shutout of the season and fourth by the Saints.
Maryville improves to 3-1-1 overall, 2-1-0 in the GLVC. The Prairie Stars slip to 2-3 overall, 0-3 in the conference. The Saints are back in action Sunday as they travel to face Southern Indiana.
