St. Louis - William Jewell used a goal that hit the post and spun back into the net to edge the Maryville women's soccer team 1-0 Friday afternoon in St. Louis during Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Â
Neither team generated many scoring chances in the first half but Maryville's two best opportunities were by
Amanda Wiechens. She had a shot stopped by WJC goalie Jordan Lewis midway through the first half, and Wiechens also had a header that narrowly flew over the crossbar. The best opportunity was by Brittan O'Dell but Saints' keeper
Madison Buelow came up with the save.
Â
The Saints pressed their offense and again had two good scoring chances.
Hana McGinis was stopped in the middle of the penalty area in the 51st minute.
Ashley Pogue had another chance in the 63rd minute but her shot was also stopped by Lewis. However, in the 78tt minute of play, the visiting Cardinals found the back of the net. Lea Maxwell pushed the ball up the left side of the Saints defense to Gabby Brooks. Brooks collected the pass near the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot to the far side. Her shot struck the right post and spun into the net for what would prove to be the game winner.
Shannon Foley had a shot in the final minute to try and equalize but her shot was stopped as the Cardinals (2-1-3, 2-1-2) held on.
Â
The Saints slid to 3-2-2 overall, 2-2-1 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action Sunday, as it hosts Rockhurst in a Noon start.
