St. Louis - Despite a goal by
Amanda Wiechens, the Maryville women's soccer team saw a rally fall short in a 2-1 defeat to visiting Rockhurst. The Saints dip to 3-3-2 overall, 2-3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Hawks improve to 8-1 overall, 5-1 in the conference.

The Hawks grabbed the early lead when Mia Zanaboni collected a pass from Jessica Cook and found the back of the net in the 12th minute. The Saints had their first strong scoring chance but
Hana McGinis' shot was saved. Maryville earned three straight corner kicks but was unable to convert as the half ended with the Saints down the one score.
Â
Rockhurst doubled its lead 63 seconds after halftime when Zanaboni and Nicole Vermes strung two straight passes to Taylor Skala who converted for a 2-0 Hawks lead. The Saints finally broke through in the 58th minute of play.
Ashley Pogue dribbled up the right side and pushed a pass to Wiechens. She settled the ball inside the 18-yard penalty area and chipped the RU goalie. Wiechens' shot hit the crossbar but bounced in as the Saints cut their deficit in half. Less than two minutes later,
Shannon Foley put a shot on goal but her attempt was saved on the line.
Danielle Schmitz shook free in front of the RU net but her late header just missed to the left as the Saints were unable to draw level.
