Volleyball Beats UMSL for First Time in Program History

St. Louis - Freshman Maddie Timmermann hammered down a career-high 16 kills and hit .433 to go along with five blocks, four of the solo variety, as Maryville defeated city-rival Missouri-St. Louis for the first time in program history. The Saints rallied by the Tritons 21-25, 25-13, 25-18, 26-24 as UMSL had won the previous 12 meetings.
 
The Saints managed only a .045 hitting percentage as the visiting Tritons took advantage to take the first set. Maryville held a 10-7 lead in the second set before an Ashley Selman kill started a 4-0 run. She teamed with Grace Balcerak on a block, and Hana Michael added a kill. An UMSL hitting error pushed the Saints ahead 14-7. The Tritons closed to 15-10 before the Saints took control. After a miscue by the Tritons, Timmermann recorded a solo block. Taryn Trubich placed back-to-back kills in for a 19-10 lead as the Saints evened the match. Maryville hit .429 in the set.
 
The Saints held a 16-12 lead before storming ahead on four straight points. USML had a service error, Timmermann registered a solo block, and Laura Welling notched a kill for a 20-12 cushion. UMSL made a late push but a Selman kill closed out the set.
 
Set four featured seven ties and three lead changes before the Saints pulled out a thrilling win at the end. Maryville took a 13-11 lead an extended the advantage to six on three straight kills and an UMSL error. The Saints were up 19-13 but the Tritons scored eight straight points to surge ahead 21-19. Balcerak's kill finally ended the UMSL run. Down 22-20, Timmermann and Michael had consecutive kills to tie the set. UMSL went back ahead 24-23 before the Saints scored the final three points. Michael had a kill, and Selman pounded down a kill to give Maryville match point. On UMSL's final swing, the Tritons were called for an illegal backrow attack to give the Saints a thrilling 26-24 win.
 
Timmermann took 21 swings before committing her first error as she hit over .400 for the third time this season. The freshman also doubled her season mark for solo blocks as she had four solo stuffs in the Saints first 12 matches. Selman recorded 13 kills and added five blocks. Welling added 10 kills, while Ali Lampen, who ranks second in the nation in digs per set, registered 22 digs. During the match, she went over the 1,000-dig plateau for her career and now has 1,008. Trubich had 25 assists, while Hannah Seitter finished with 22 assists.
 
The Saints improve to 7-6 overall, 3-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Tritons fall to 7-5 overall, 4-3 in the league. The Saints are back in action Friday, Oct. 3, when they host Drury in a 7 p.m. match.
