Saints and Lions Battle to Scoreless Draw as Doerflinger Posts Nine Saves

St. Charles, Mo. - Freshman goalie Bailey Doerflinger faced a barrage of 18 Lindenwood shots but posted nine saves as Maryville earned a 0-0 tie in the season opener against the Lions in St. Charles, Mo.

The Lions opened the game with four straight shots on goal but Doerflinger kept the game scoreless. The Saints pushed forward and controlled the middle portion of the first half. Maryville earned three corner kicks in a short span but the best chance was a shot by Jen Jung that was blocked.

Early in the second half, Amanda Wiechens had the best scoring chance for the Saints but her shot was stopped by LU keeper Melissa Weiss. The Saints kept up the pressure and had three straight shots, one by Nadia Abu-Douleh and two by Wiechens but the contest remained without a goal. Lindenwood had two good scoring chances, one in the final moments of regulation, but the freshman keeper for the Saints came up with two more saves.

In the two overtime sessions, the Saints were unable to get a shot on goal. Meanwhile, Doerflinger notched three more saves as the game ended in a scoreless draw. Wiechens finished with three shots on goal for Maryville.

The Saints are at home Saturday, Sept. 6, when they host Waldorf in a 1 p.m. game at the Maryville Soccer Field.
