Volleyball Posts Sweeps of West Liberty and Saint Joseph's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Louis - On the opening day of the 2014 Drury Plaza / Maryville Invitational, the host Saints posted a 2-0 mark and were the only squad not to drop a set. Maryville swept West Liberty 25-21, 25-17, 25-12 to open the tournament, and in the night cap, the Saints edged Saint Joseph's in a non-conference matchup 25-19, 25-21, 26-24.
 
Freshman Ashley Selman made an impressive debut with 14 kills, just one error on 21 swings for a .619 hitting percentage. Hana Michael added eight kills and 11 digs, while Ali Lampen led the defense with a team-best 18 digs. The Saints hit .243 as a squad while holding West Liberty to just a .036 hitting percentage.
 
Against the Pumas, another Maryville freshman Maddie Timmermann made her mark with 11 kills on 19 attempts and did not have a hitting error to finish with a .579 hitting percentage. Selman chipped in eight kills on a .412 hitting percentage and dominated with eight blocks. Michael again narrowly missed a double-double as she notched nine kills and 13 digs. Lampen recorded a match-high 24 digs. The Maryville defense again was stout as it held the Pumas to a .098 team hitting mark. Kate Wagenaar was impressive for the Pumas as she notched a match-best 19 kills.
 
In other action, Minnesota-Crookston defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 3-1 in the day's first match, and the UMC Golden Eagles downed Saint Joseph's 3-1 in the middle contest of the day. In the fourth tilt, Kentucky Wesleyan rebounded to defeat West Liberty 3-1.
 
Action starts Saturday morning with West Liberty facing Minnesota-Crookston at 9 a.m. in Moloney Arena. The Saints first match of the day is at 11 a.m. against former Great Lakes Valley Conference member Kentucky Wesleyan. The final match of the tournament is at 5 p.m. when the Saints face Minnesota-Crookston.
