The Maryville women's basketball team cut a double-digit deficit to just four points but No. 2 ranked Lewis hit eight straight free throws to down the Saints 88-77 Saturday in Romeoville, Ill. Shelby Miller and Jade Rogers both recorded double-doubles but the Saints were unable to end the Flyers' long winning streak.
Maryiah Brawner-Henley hit two free throws to give the Flyers a 76-64 lead with 4:34 to play before the Saints mounted a big comeback. Rita Flynn scored on a layup, grabbed a defensive rebound which led to a three-point play to pull the Saints to 76-69. Lewis pushed the margin back to 80-69 with 2:56 remaining but Maryville would not relent.
Madeline Hartke scored on a layup, Miller had a steal and fed Rogers for a hoop to pull the Saints to 80-73. Miller then drilled a 3-pointer as the Saints inched to within four at 80-76 with 1:36 to go. Nikki Nellen sank two free throws before Miller answered with one at the line for an 82-77 gap. Jamie Johnson converted two at the line for the Flyers, and after the Saints missed, Lewis closed out the game with four more charity tosses.
Rogers, Miller and Flynn all finished with 17 points for the Saints. Rogers completed her double-double with 12 rebounds, while Miller finished with 10 boards. Flynn sank 8-of-11 shots en route to recording her season high in points. Jamie Johnson led Lewis (15-0, 5-0 GLVC) with 30 points and added seven rebounds and six assists. The Flyers were outstanding at the line and hit 26-of-28 (92.9 percent) at the stripe.
The Saints slip to 8-5 overall, 2-2 in the conference. Maryville returns home Thursday, Jan. 15, when Quincy visits for a 5:30 p.m. tip. The contest is "Mania Night" with a "Blackout" theme, and all Saints fans are urged to wear black to the game.
