Shelby Miller became Maryville's all-time leader in scoring but No. 21 Drury rallied to edge the Saints 77-70 Thursday evening in Moloney Arena. Miller surpassed the previous record of 1,463 points scored by
Abby Duethman, who was in attendance at the game, on a 3-pointer from the right wing with 3:54 left in the first half. Miller has tallied 1,465 thus far in her career.
Â
After Drury scored the first two points of the game, the Saints answered with eight straight points to surge ahead.
Jordynn Martin scored on a layup, and back-to-back 3-pointers from Miller and
Ali Ringering handed the Saints an 8-2 lead. Maryville still led 14-9 and went on an 11-2 run to seize command.
Carly Frala converted two free throws and a layup to ignite the run. Miller hit a layup, but after a Drury score, Frala nailed a 3-pointer from the wing.
Â
After Miller tallied a bucket, one free throw by
Rita Flynn pushed the Saints up 26-11. The Saints kept the margin, and Miller hit the record-breaking basket for a 31-19 lead. However, the Panthers closed the half on a 9-2 run as Maryville went to the dressing room up 33-28.
Â
The Saints opened the second half on a 7-1 run and surged back up 41-29 on a
Jade Rogers jumper. The Panthers cut into the Maryville advantage and drew to 43-41 with 13 minutes to play. The Saints steadied themselves on consecutive buckets by Rogers. The Panthers scored but Rita Flynn answered with a jumper, and Martin's two free throws extended the Saints advantage to 51-43 at the 11:03 mark. Maryville's margin was still 54-46 on a Ringering triple but Annie Armstrong made three straight 3-pointers for Drury. The teams traded the lead seven straight times. Ringering's layup pushed the Saints ahead 63-62 with 3:17 remaining but the Panthers tallied nine points in a row to grab the lead. Martin hit a 3-pointer in the final minute to draw the Saints to within five points but the Panthers, the top free throw shooting team in the nation, hit six straight free throws to hold on for the win. The Saints led for nearly 33 minutes of the contest until Drury's late comeback.
Â
Miller led five Saints in double figures with 14 points, while Frala more than doubled her career high with 13 points. Rogers hauled down 15 rebounds, the most by a Maryville player this season. Armstrong poured in 30 points to lead Drury (13-3, 7-1 GLVC).
Â
The Saints slip to 10-7 overall, 4-4 in the GLVC. Maryville is back on the court Saturday when it hosts Missouri S&T for a 1 p.m. tip.
