In a game that went back and forth for 40 minutes, Maryville could not mount another late run as William Jewell took advantage of the contest in the second half to defeat the Saints 60-49 at The Mabee Center in Liberty, Mo.
The Cardinals used an early 3-point shooting barrage to take 13-7 lead in the first five minutes of the game as the Saints struggled to find their shooting touch in the early goings. William Jewell was able to maintain the lead at 28-21 with 5:17 remaining in the half until Maryville was able to go on a 13-3 run to end the half and take a 34-31 advantage into the halftime locker room.
The second half started with both teams looking to hit shots as they combined for 11 points over the first 8 minutes 14 seconds with the Cardinals tying the game at 38-38. From that point, William Jewell would take control on the game with a 15-3 run that lasted nearly nine minutes to grab a 53-41 lead with 2:18 remaining and coast to their eighth win of the year.
Maryville (10-9, 5-5 GLVC) was paced by seniors
Trae Pemberton and
Armon Provo , who scored 12 points apiece while Provo grabbed 9 rebounds in the defeat.
Darius Tomlin came off the bench to hit for 14 points to pace the Cardinals (8-10, 4-6 GLVC) as
Jordan Lewis added 13 markers while
Patrick Whelan and
D'Vante Mosby added 11 and 10 points respectfully to aid in the victory.
Maryville continues their road swing to the Western part of Missouri with a match-up at Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon. Tip off time is set for 3 p.m.
