After a slow start, the Maryville men's basketball Saints had its chances late in the game before falling to University of Wisconsin-Parkside 70-56 at DeSimone Gymnasium on Thursday night. The game was the first road Great Lakes Valley Conference contest for the Saints.
The Saints fell behind to the Rangers early in the contest 19-4 before Maryville was able to catch their breath and find their shooting touch midway through the first half. The Saints then went on a 7-0 run to cut the UW-Parkside lead to 19-11 on an Armon Provo jumper with 5:43 left in the half, but the Rangers continued to control the offensive end and took a 30-20 lead to the halftime locker room.
UW-Parkside came out in the second half and put together a 16-7 run to take a 46-27 lead with 14:10 to go in the contest, but the Saints would not go away quietly. Maryville would then go on a 25-10 run to cut the lead down to 56-52 with 3:41 left on a 3-point bomb from Trae Pemberton. The run was powered by great defense and a strong team rebounding effort. The Rangers would then string together a 12-0 run over the next 2:16 to put the game out of reach.
Pemberton led the scoring charge for Maryville (7-5, 2-1) with 15 points, including three triples on the night. Josh Montague added 8 points and 5 boards in the defeat.
Zigimantas Riauka paced the Rangers (11-1, 3-0) with 17 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Mohamed Mohamed came off the bench to add 16 markers while Jimmy Gavin chipped in with 15 points.
The Saints continue their two game road trip on Saturday as they travel to Romeoville, IL to take on Lewis at 3:15pm.
