Ryan Schlick scored with less than three minutes remaining in the game, and Maryville held off a late charge by Missouri S&T to claim a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference contest Friday in St. Louis. The victory is the third straight in league play, the first time the Saints have done that since moving into the GLVC. In addition, Maryville has fashioned a three-game winning streak for the first time since September 2006.
Last in the first half,
Luke Gilsinger lifted a long cross from the right side of the Missouri S&T net that settled to Colby Gumm. From well outside the box on the left side, Gumm rifled in a shot over the Miners' keeper and into the upper right corner for a 1-0 Saints lead. Maryville took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Miners carried the play and pushed for the equalizer. The visitors had a flurry of shots, including one off the crossbar. The Miners finally scored when David Murphy found the back of the net off as his shot deflected off a Saints defender and into the net in the 82nd minute. The Saints answered in the late going when Zach Klipsch settled a long pass, pushed up the side of the Miner defense and found Schlick on the right edge of the Missouri S&T box. Schlick curled in a shot to the far post for a 2-1 Maryville lead in the 88th minute.
The Saints then had to survive a late flurry by the visitors. It appeared that Missouri S&T might have scored the game-tying goal, but the crossing pass was ruled to have gone out past the end line. The Saints survived a late corner kick to record their third-straight victory in GLVC action.
The Saints improve to 5-4-1 overall, 3-3-1 in the league. The Miners drop to 4-5 overall, 4-3 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action Sunday as it hosts Drury in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
