Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | St. Louis

Wiechens Header Guides Maryville Past Missouri S&T 1-0

Amanda Wiechens headed in a first-half goal off a corner kick, and the Maryville women's soccer defense made it stand up as the Saints defeated Missouri S&T Friday afternoon. The goal is the fifth on the season for Wiechens, which ties her for the team lead in goals and gives her a team-high 11 points on the year.

The Saints had two early scoring opportunities but Missouri S&T's Carrie Levy made both saves. In the 24tht minute, the Saint earned a corner kick. Nadia Abu-Douleh, who leads the Great Lakes Valley Conference in assists, lifted the ball into the middle of the Lady Miners' defense. Wiechens ran under the pass and headed it into the net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal as Abu-Douleh picked up her seventh assist of the season. Wiechens nearly doubled the Maryville lead but her shot was turned aside.

Early in the second half, Ashley Pogue almost tallied for the Saints but her blast struck the crossbar. Hana McGinis' had two shots saved as the Saints tried to stretch out their advantage. The Miners' best chance might have come midway through the half but Saints' keeper Bailey Doerflinger came up with the stop en route to posting the shutout.  The Saints were slowed by Levy who finished with eight saves in the game for the Miners (1-7-1, 0-6-1) as the Saints had nine shots on goal.

Maryville wins its second straight and ups its mark to 5-3-1 overall, 4-2-1 in the GLVC. The Saints are back in action Sunday as they host Drury in a Noon start.
