Foley Score Earns 1-1 Tie Versus Drury in Women's Soccer

Shannon Foley scored the game-tying goal in the 70th minute as the Maryville women's soccer team rallied to earn a 1-1 draw against visiting Drury on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon. The tie runs the Saints unbeaten streak to three games with two wins and a draw.

Drury had the wind at its back in the first half but the Saints defense did not allow the Panthers to get a shot off in the opening 45 minutes. Maryville had three shots with the two best scoring chances coming when Hana McGinis and Allison Verville were both stopped by Drury keeper Tina Haberberger.

In the second half, the Saints were going with the wind and carried the play. Maryville had four good scoring chances but were turned away in each instance. In the 61st minute, the Panthers struck on their first shot on goal. Kerri Morris, who leads DU in goals, collected a pass and slotted home from the left side, about eight yards out. Less than 10 minutes later, the Saints equalized. After a corner kick, the ball bounced around in the Drury penalty and fell to Foley. She nudged the ball into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season and a 1-1 tie at the 70-minute mark. The Saints had two shots to win the game in regulation but both were blocked by the Panther defense. Drury nearly won it late but Saints goalie Bailey Doerflinger came up with the save as the game moved into overtime.

Neither team had a shot on goal in the first overtime session but the Saints had two golden chances early in the second OT. McGinis lofted a shot from outside the DU penalty area and the ball hung up in the wind before hitting the crossbar. The rebound bounced out to Verville but her shot was saved as the game eventually ended in the 1-1 draw.

The Saints are now 5-3-2 on the season, 4-2-2 in the GLVC. The Panthers move their record to 5-2-3 overall, 4-2-2 in the league.
