The Maryville volleyball team had its season-high three-match winning streak end at the hands of No. 9 Rockhurst. The visiting Hawks won by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-19.
Maddie Timmermann had nine kills and a career-high seven blocks to pace the Saints.
The Saints tied set one at 7-7 on a
Hana Michael kill. Rockhurst edged out to an 11-9 lead before scoring three straight points for a five-point margin.
Laura Welling notched a kill to ignite a 4-0 run and her termination pulled the Saints back to 14-13. An
Ashley Selman solo block drew Maryville to 17-15 before the Saints scored four straight to take command.
In set two,
Ali Lampen's service ace handed the Saints a 4-3 advantage. Rockhurst answered with four straight points for a 7-4 margin. Timmermann had a kill, teamed with Welling on a block, and a Welling kill tied the set at 7-all. After the Hawks scored a point, Timmermann had another kill and block sequence for a 9-8 Maryville cushion. The Saints eventually went up 11-9 after kills by Timmermann and Welling before Rockhurst scored five straight for a 14-11 lead. The visitors used another 6-0 run to go up by nine. The Saints rallied and tallied seven of the next eight points but the Hawks closed the set with three straight points.
Set three was tied most of the way until Rockhurst took a 16-14 lead. Timmermann had a kill and joined with Taryn Trubich for a block to tie things at 16-16. Unfortunately, the Hawks scored five of the next six points and built a 21-17 advantage. Ashley Selman had a kill but the Hawks tallied four of the final five points to close out the match.
Welling and Selman both finished with seven kills, while Ali Lampen notched 13 digs. The Saints out-blocked the Hawks 10-7 but could not overcome Rockhurst's .319 hitting percentage.
The Saints drop to 9-13 overall, 1-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks improve to 21-1 and are unbeaten at 10-0 in the league. Maryville is back in action tomorrow as it hosts William Jewell in a 3 p.m. contest.
