Buoyed by a season-best .398 hitting percentage, the Maryville volleyball team swept William Jewell Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Set scores were 25-15, 25-12, 25-14. The Saints have won four of their last five matches, with the lone setback coming at the hands of nationally-ranked Rockhurst.

The Saints hit .400 in the first set and led the whole way. Up 5-4,
Ashley Selman had a kill to start a 3-0 burst. Holding a 10-7 advantage, a
Hana Michael kill was followed by a solo block by
Maddie Timmermann and a kill by
Taryn Trubich for a 13-7 lead. Maryville was still up 15-11 and put the set away with five of the next six points.

Set two was deadlocked at 5-5 before the Saints shook loose for a 5-0 burst to take command. Timmermann started the run with a kill, and Selman followed with another kill. WJC hurt itself with two hitting errors and a
Laura Welling block led to a 10-5 cushion. Still leading 13-9, the Saints tallied seven of the next eight points fueled by five kills for a 20-10 margin. The Cardinals tallied two straight before the Saints closed the set with five consecutive points. The Saints hit a blazing .481 in the set.

After the third set was tied at 8-8, Maryville scored three straight points on a WJC error, Welling kill and a solo block by Selman for an 11-8 lead. Still leading with a 14-11 count, the Saints reeled off a 6-0 run. Michael started the burst with a kill, and Timmermann followed with two straight tips. After a Timmermann block, WJC committed an error, and
Zoe Zeiter's kill closed the run. The Saints put the set out of reach with a 4-0 run, and Welling's kill closed out the match.

Timmermann and Michael paced the Saints with 12 kills apiece while hitting .556 and .545, respectively. Timmermann had four solo blocks, while Michael added six digs and three service aces. Selmon hit .500 and finished with three blocks, and Ali Lampen posted a match-high 20 digs. Trubich had 34 assists, four digs and three kills while directing the Saints attack. Maryville finished with nine blocks while the Cardinals did not record a single block in the match.

The Saints improve to 10-13 overall, 2-9 in the GLVC, while the Cardinals tumble to 7-17 overall, 1-10 in the league. Maryville returns to the court Tuesday, Oct. 27, when it hosts Washburn for a 6 p.m. nonconference match.
