Behind a sterling defensive effort that saw
Ali Lampen record 45 digs, the third most in program history, the Maryville volleyball team pushed No. 10 Washburn the distance but the Ichabods held off the Saints upset bid 24-26, 25-16, 25-14, 20-25, 15-9.

Trailing set one 16-10, the Saints crept back into the contest with four straight points. Still down 20-16, Maryville tied the set with another 4-0 run. The Ichabods still led 23-21 before the Saints surged ahead.
Ashley Selman had a kill, and Washburn committed an error.
Maddie Timmermann finished off a pass for a 24-23 lead. WU tied the set but
Hana Michael had a kill, and
Laura Welling's kill handed the Saints the first set. Washburn took the next two sets as it hit .293 and .389 to jump into the lead.

The Saints led set four 10-7 and took control with three consecutive points. Taryn Trubich tipped in a kill, and Selman followed. Selman and
Zoe Zeiter teamed for a block for a 13-7 lead. Maryville still was up 19-14 before a 3-0 run lead to a 22-14 edge. Washburn answered with four straight points but the Saints forced a fifth set on a WU service error.

Washburn led the fifth set 4-3 before the Saints scored three straight. Timmermann had consecutive kills, and a Washburn hitting error forged a 6-4 lead for the Saints. However, the Ichabods answered with a 4-0 run to take the lead 8-6. Welling had a kill to slow down Washburn, but the visitors used a 5-0 outburst to seize control.

Lampen's 45 digs are second to her school record of 47 set notched against Oakland City Oct. 21, 2014. Welling led the offense with 12 kills, while Selman added 11 kills and six blocks. Michael narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 12 digs. Trubich handed out 38 assists. Alyssa Carney had 30 digs for Washburn (23-2). Korie Thompson and Sarah Vicory both finished with 16 kills for the Ichabods.

The Saints (10-14) return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday, Oct. 30, as they host Illinois Springfield at 7 p.m.
