No. 19 Bellarmine Holds Off Saints 2-1

Maryville's women's soccer team tallied just the seventh goal allowed by Bellarmine this season but the No. 19 Knights held off the Saints by a 2-1 score.

The Saints had the first good scoring chance in the seventh minute when Allison Verville's shot forced a save by BU keeper Taylor Smith. On the first shot on goal by the Knights, Darcy Egan tapped in from short range after a well-placed cross for a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The Saints answered immediately in just over a minute. Dani Schmitz started the sequence when she gathered the ball on the right side of the BU penalty area. She turned and fired a shot towards the Bellarmine goal, and the shot bounced off a defender. The Knights tried the clear the ball but the kick caused the ball to bounce into the goal as the Saints drew level. The game remained tied at 1-1 before the Knights scored the eventual winner. Katie Fernandez dribbled up the right side and lofted a ball over the Saints defense but under the bar for a 2-1 lead in the 22nd minute.

In the second half, the Saints nearly tied the game when Hana McGinis and Shannon Foley had consecutive shots on frame but both were saved. A few minutes later, the ball fell to Foley but her blast was blocked. Maryville's best chance came late on a header by Amanda Wiechens but the ball drifted wide as Bellarmine (14-1-2 overall, 11-1-2 GLVC) escaped with the win.

The Saints slip to 6-7-3 overall, 5-6-3 in the league. Maryville plays its final game of the season Wednesday as it hosts crosstown rival University of Missouri-St. Louis in a 3 pm start.
