The Maryville volleyball team had a late comeback fall short and was swept in three straight sets as Drury posted its sixth win with a 25-15, 25-17, 26-24 win in Great Lakes Valley Conference action in Springfield, Mo., Saturday night.
Ashley Selman started the match with a kill on the first point but the Panthers answered with the next five points to grab the lead. A Drury hitting error scored another point for the Saints but the Panthers tacked on another 5-0 run. The Saints tallied three of the next four points and got as close as 13-6. A kill by Laura Welling and a DU hitting error pulled the Saints to 15-10 but the Panthers pulled away for the win in the opening set.
In the second set, consecutive kills by Welling and Maddie Timmermann boosted Maryville to an early 4-2 margin. Kelsey Warden's service ace pushed the Saints ahead 6-3. Ali Lampen notched a kill for a 9-7 lead until Drury assumed a 13-9 lead. A hitting error by the Panthers pulled the Saints to 13-10 but Drury scored three straight and took a two-set lead into the break.
Zoe Zeiter's kill started set three before the Panthers tallied five straight points. Trailing 10-4, Maryville used a 5-0 run to trim the gap to just one point. Drury was unable to pull away and the set stayed in doubt as Maryville stayed within contact. The Saints got as close as one point on five difference occasions before a Michael ace finally drew the Saints even 23-23. Welling's kill gave the Saints set point but DU tied the set at 24-24. However, a Drury kill and a Saints miscue ended the point and the match 26-24.
Welling led the Saints with nine kills, while Lampen came up with 20 digs. Taryn Trubich finished with 24 assists, while Michael added five kills and 11 digs.
The Saints are now 6-9 overall, 1-5 in the GLVC. The Panthers improve to 13-2 overall, 5-1 in the league. Maryville is back on the court Tuesday, Oct. 6, as the Saints make the short trip to the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a 7 p.m. match.
