Welling Paces Saints with 13 Kills as Saints Tripped up by Drury in Four Sets

Laura Welling recorded a team-high 13 kills but the Maryville volleyball team fell in four sets to Drury by scores of 25-13, 18-25, 25-17, 25-14. Early in the contest, Ali Lampen reached a rare milestone when recorded the 2,000th dig of her career. She is already the program's all-time leader in digs.

The Panthers scored the first five points of the match and did not surrender the lead in winning the first set. The Saints turned the tables to open set two by scoring the first four points. Zoe Zeiter started the run, and Welling added a kill. After a DU error, Taryn Trubich finished a play for the 4-0 lead. After Drury scored, the Saints tacked on three more points to surge to a 7-1 lead. The Panthers roared back by scoring eight consecutive points to jump to a 9-7 advantage. Drury took an 11-8 margin but the Saints answered with five unanswered points. Zeiter ignited the run, and Hana Michael added a kill. After a Maddie Timmermann kill, Zeiter followed with another termination. A DU hitting error handed the Saints a 13-11 cushion. Maryville still led by 15-13 and took control with a 4-0 run. Welling sandwiched two kills around one by Timmermann, and a Drury miscue handed the Saints a 19-13 lead. The Saints did not allow the Panthers closer than five the rest of the way en route to tying the match.

In set three, Michael had a kill to draw the Saints to 6-5 but the Panthers reeled off five-in-a-row for an 11-5 edge. Later after block by Timmermann and Michael, Timmermann hammered in a kill to pull Maryville to 13-8 before the Panthers scored four of the next five and eventually took a 2-1 lead. Drury enjoyed an early burst in set four by scoring the first four points. After a DU miscue, Taylor Luebbers served an ace. The Panthers added a point before a kill by Welling and a block by Ashley Selman and Trubich. The Saints got as close as 11-9 after a Michael kill but the Panthers scored four straight and held on to win the match.

Welling was supported by Michael and Trubich who both added six kills. Trubich added 28 assists on the night. Lampen finished with 25 digs during her milestone evening. Selman topped the Saints with four blocks. Brooke Antenen had an outstanding match to lead Drury (21-9, 11-6 GLVC) with 32 assists, 15 kills, eight digs and three blocks.

The Saints slip to 12-18 overall, 4-13 in the GLVC. Maryville closes out the season Saturday on Senior Day as the Saints face Missouri S&T in a 1 p.m. match.
