Saints Beat Hannibal-LaGrange 85-50 for Ellis' 600th Career Victory

The Maryville women's basketball team defeated Hannibal-LaGrange 85-50 to hand head coach Chris Ellis his 600th career coaching victory over his 31 seasons at the collegiate and high school levels. He has posted a 246-145 record in his 15th season at Maryville. The Saints scored the first 10 points of the game and cruised to the victory Monday night.
 
Alex Hillyer scored on a layup, and Carly Frala followed with another. After a Hillyer jumper in the lane, Jordynn Martin sank two free throws and a layup for the double-digit lead. The Saints held the Trojans scoreless for nearly four minutes and eventually settled for a 23-16 lead after the first quarter.
 
HLG nailed a jumper before the Saints reeled off 11 consecutive points. Alex Wolf scored inside, and Stephanie Sherwood hit two free throws. Hillyer scored a layup before Martin drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Sherwood's layup was good for a 34-18 lead midway through the second. Hannibal-LaGrange made one free throw but the Saints tacked on another 15-0 burst to grab a 30-point lead. Hiller had consecutive buckets, and Frala converted a three-point play. After Wolf scored off an offensive board, Ellen Foster knocked down two from the stripe. Hillyer's layup pushed the Saints ahead 49-19. Maryville took a 51-22 edge into halftime. The Saints pushed their advantage to as much as 44 points late in the third quarter and cruised in the fourth to close out the win and improve to 2-0 on the season.
 
Hillyer hit 9-of-12 shots from the field en route to a game-high 20 points along with nine rebounds. Wolf scored 13 points, while Frala and Sherwood finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sherwood added seven rebounds and came up with five steals. Morgan Winkler led the Trojans (0-4) with 18 points. The Saints outrebounded HLG 51-37 and forced the Trojans into 21 turnovers. Maryville took advantage at the free-throw line by hitting 16-of-18 at the stripe.
 
The Saints are not in action again until next Tuesday, Nov. 24, when they host LeMoyne-Owen.
