The Maryville women's basketball team used a big first quarter and had five players in double figures to post a 91-67 win over Trevecca Nazarene at the Drury University Thanksgiving Classic. The Saints stay unbeaten at 4-0 and are off to their best start since opening the 2003-04 season with five straight wins.
Alex Hillyer hit a jumper on the first possession of the game, and Carly Frala followed by knocking down a 3-pointer. Jordynn Martin made one free throw to push the Saints to a 6-0 lead. Maryville held the Trojans scoreless for more than two minutes. The Saints eventually went up 17-9 when Stephanie Sherwood hit a 3-pointer. Frala scored on a layup late in the first quarter for a 27-17 lead.
TNU made the first basket of the second until Ali Ringering and Ellen Foster scored to open a 31-19 margin. The Saints built a 13-point lead but the Trojans closed to 39-36. Foster made two free throws, and a Ringering added two more from the stripe for a 43-37 lead at halftime.
Still up 45-39 in the third, Hillyer scored inside to start a quick 6-0 run. Ringering sank two free throws, and Alex Wolf powered up for a layup and a 51-39 lead three minutes into the quarter. Foster's two free throws sparked another 7-0 burst as the Saints took control. Martin drilled a 3-pointer and followed with a layup for a 62-49 advantage.
The Saints stretched out their advantage in the fourth quarter with 11 straight points. Hillyer made a 3-pointer, an Wolf added a jumper. Jordyne Dugger scored on a jumper, Foster on a layup, and Dugger's short jumper pushed the Saints ahead 79-60. The Saints held TNU to just two points over the last three and a half minutes to ease to the win.
Hillyer led the Saints scoring parade with 16 points and added six rebounds. Ringering and Foster both finished with 14 points, while Martin and Sherwood chipped in 12 apiece. Wolf led the efforts on the glass with 10 rebounds. The Saints shot 52.5 percent from the field (31-of-59) while holding Trevecca Nazarene (1-5) to just 37.3 percent marksmanship.
The Saints close out the classic Saturday with a 7:45 p.m. game against Concordia-St. Paul of Minnesota.Â
