Tritons Use Big Fourth Quarter to Down Saints

The Maryville women's basketball team made the short trip to north St. Louis and was looking for its second straight league road win. However, the University of Missouri-St. Louis used a 15-0 run early in the fourth quarter to rally for a 74-61 win to spoil a double-double by Alex Hillyer.
 
The Saints grabbed the early lead by scoring the first seven points of the contest. UMSL slowly came back and took its first lead of the day. After trailing by three after the first quarter, the Saints outscored the Tritons 20-7 in the second to jump to a 35-25 halftime lead.  Hillyer hit a jumper in the lane to put the Saints up 21-20, and Carly Frala sank two free throws. Hillyer scored again before Jordynn Martin swished one free throw to close the 9-0 burst.
 
The Tritons clawed back into the game as they opened the third quarter by scoring the first eight points. Free throws by Ali Ringering restored the Saints lead back to 37-33. The game stayed close and was tied at 43-all before one Alex Wolf free throw and two at the stripe by Ringering were good for a 46-43 lead after three. The Saints built a 50-43 cushion following a Wolf layup with nine minutes to go, until UMSL reeled off 15 straight points to charge ahead 58-50.  Hillyer broke the string with a pair of free throws to pull the Saints to 58-52 with 2:29 to play. The Saints were unable to get the defiict into single digits as the Tritons improved to 4-5 overall, 1-2 in the conference.

Hillyer topped the Saints wtih 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Wolf matched her teammate with 10 boards. Ringering finished with 13 pooints. The Saints slip to 5-3 overall, 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Maryville is next in action in the state of California when they play Holy Names Saturday and Sonoma State Sunday.
