Ali Ringering caught fire in the second half en route to a career-high 24 points as Maryville defeated the University of Indianapolis 82-74 at Nicoson Hall on Thursday night.
The Saints (8-3, 2-2 GLVC) started the evening by scoring the first six points of the night after
Stephanie Sherwood and
Alex Wolf hit jumpers and
Alex Hillyer added a pair of free throws. The Saints took a 21-15 lead after the first period of play.
Maryville extended the lead on a 13-4 run to start the second period as Sherwood scored six of her 15 points in that stretch. Hillyer sank a trey from the corner and another pair of free throws to give the Saints a 34-20 advantage with 4:23 remaining in the period. Sarah Costello hit a layup and a triple from the top of the key to start a Greyhound 14-3 run as UIndy closed the gap to 37-34 at halftime.
The two teams came out in the third period shooting well from the field as they traded baskets for the better part of the period. Ringering took control of the game as she drilled a three from the left wing to give Maryville a 50-48 lead with 2:44 left in the period. After a UIndy turnover, she drained another triple to give the Saints 53-48 advantage with 1:32 remaining in the period.
Maryville extended the lead to 66-59 with 4:43 left in the game on a Wolf jumper, but the Greyhounds answered with back-to-back threes from Princess German and Costello to quickly cut the Maryville lead to a single point with 3:20 remaining in the contest. Hillyer nailed a layup and Ringering added another triple to give the Saints a 71-65 lead with just over two minutes left as Maryville never looked back.
Ringering finished the night with a career-high 24 points on the night, including a sizzling 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to lead all scorers. Wolf added a season-high 16 markers while Sherwood netted 15 points. Hillyer added 13 points and grabbed eight boards for the Saints.
German paced the Greyhounds (2-11, 0-3 GLVC) with 21 points while Costello added 19 points and Nicole Anderson put in 13 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds in the loss.
Maryville returns to action this Saturday as it travels to Rensselaer, Ind., to take on Saint Joseph's College in a 1 p.m. tip.
