The Maryville women's basketball team led No. 8 Lewis at halftime but was unable to hang on as the Flyers used a big fourth quarter to hold off the Saints 69-52. Lewis improved to 15-1 overall, 6-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Saints slipped to 8-5 overall, 2-4 in the league.

The visiting Flyers held a 15-10 lead before Madeline Hartke nailed a 3-pointer. Lewis was still up 17-13 before the Saints stormed out to a 12-2 burst to surge ahead. Alex Hillyer sank two free throws to pull the Saints to within 17-15, and she notched a three-point play to put Maryville up 18-17 early in the second quarter. Lewis scored on its next possession but the Saints tallied the next seven points. Ellen Foster drove the lane for a bucket, and Hartke converted two at the stripe. Stephanie Sherwood drilled a corner 3-pointer to give the Saints a 25-19 lead at the 5:40 mark. The Flyers stayed close and eventually tied the game at 29-29 all. Sherwood sank another triple for a 32-29 lead but Lewis scored before the half as Maryville settled for a 32-31 edge at intermission.

In the third quarter, Mariah Brawner-Henley scored to put the Flyers up by one until Hillyer made one free throw to tie the game at 33-all. Lewis scored again but Hillyer knotted up the game with a layup. Lewis hit a jumper three minutes in to take a lead it would not surrender. Jordynne Dugger scored to bring the Saints to 40-39 but the Brawner-Henley took over for Lewis and scored the next six points for a 46-39 lead. Hillyer ended the run with two free throws as the Flyers settled for a 50-44 lead after three. One free throw by Foster drew the Saints to 54-45 with 7:20 to play but Maryville was unable to pull any closer.

Hillyer hit 10 free throws and led the Saints with 22 points and seven rebounds. Sherwood added 10 points and four rebounds. Brawner-Henley led the Flyers with a career-high 32 points and added nine rebounds.

The Saints return to action Saturday when they host Wisconsin-Parkside for a 1 p.m. game at Moloney Arena.
