Box Score Yoonjae Nam smashed a grand slam in the fourth inning to help the Maryville baseball team rally and win its first game of the season 9-4 at Trevecca Nazarene Friday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
The Trojans grabbed the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, and TNU tacked on a solo home run in the third. The Saints then rallied with their first grand slam home run since April 2, 2010. Kaleb Depew started the outburst with a double, and Mitch Carriger worked a walk. Daniel Barnett singled to put Saints on every bag. Nam cleared the bases by hitting the ball out of the park to left center to vault the Saints ahead 4-3.
The Saints stretched out their lead with three runs in the next inning. Brad Ridings doubled to leadoff the fifth and scored on a defensive miscue by TBU. Dalton Schumer put down a sac bunt, and Carriger's RBI single plated another run. Carriger stole second then came around to score on another Trojan error for a 7-3 lead.
After the Trojans answered with one run in the bottom of the eighth, the Saints put the game away with two insurance runs. Sean Murphy singled, and Ridings reached on an error. Both players moved up a base after a TNU error before Mike Wilkinson lashed a double down the right field line for a 9-4 advantage. The Saints had four extra base hits on the day.
Tyler Omlid went 6-1/3 innings, struck out nine and picked up the win for the Saints. Josh Bonds had three strikeouts and recorded the last five outs. Maryville improved to 1-3 on the season, while the Trojans fell to 0-4. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday starting at Noon.
