Armon Provo's potential game-winning 3-pointer just missed long as the Maryville men's basketball upset bid of Southern Indiana just fell short as the Screaming Eagles escaped Moloney Arena with a 64-62 Saturday afternoon.

The Saints' zone defense stymied USI as the visitors did not make a 3-pointer in the first half and inched to a 34-28 lead at intermission. The Screaming Eagles score the first basket of the second half but Jeff Leeson answered for Maryville, and Saikou Jallow made one free throw to bring the Saints to 36-31.

Southern Indiana made one free throw but the Saints received back-to-back dunks from Evan Booker and Jeff Leeson. A layup by Jallow drew the Saints to 39-37 four minutes into the second half. Down 44-41, Trae Pemberton's 3-pointer finally pulled the Saints even at 44-all at the 12:48 mark. USI converted two free throws before Provo's 3-pointer gave the Saints their first lead after halftime at 47-46.

USI pushed to a 52-49 lead but Leeson threw down another dunk, and Pemberton's layup put the Saints back ahead. Two free throws by Jallow built a 55-52 lead with 8:32 to play. The teams traded the lead two more times. Gavin Schumann made one free throw for a 59-58 lead with 3:57 remaining. Pemberton scored a layup, and Leeson followed with a jumper as the Saints stretched their lead to 62-59. The Saints defense forced a miss but turned the ball over on the sideline. USI tied it on a Bobo Drummond 3-pointer. Looking for the lead, the Saints again had a miscue. With just over a minute to play, USI's Austin Davis hit two free throws for a 64-62 lead. Maryville again had a chance to tie or take the lead but had another turnover. With the shot clock running down, USI put up a shot but Davis tipped out the offensive board. However, the Screaming Eagles missed the subsequent one-and-one to give the Saints a last look. Maryville found Provo on the left wing but his trey bounced off the rim on the far side, and USI batted the ball out as the buzzer sounded to improve to 17-6 overall, 10-5 in the GLVC.

Provo paced the Saints with 21 points, including an 8-for-8 performance at the free-throw line. Leeson set a season high with 13 points, while Pemberton also finished with 13. The Saints shot 50 percent from the field, including 60.9 percent in the second half rally. USI had four players in double figures led by Schumann and Drummond's 13 points apiece.

The Saints host their final home game of the season Thursday, Feb. 19, when Truman State visits for 1000 Saints Day at 7:30 p.m. The game is also Senior Day, and Maryville will honor seniors Josh Montague, Trae Pemberton, Armon Provo and Des Spann prior to tip.
