Despite shooting 54.2 percent from the field, the Maryville men's team was edged 86-80 by an even hotter shooting Truman State squad that converted at a 55.4 percent clip. The loss spoiled Maryville's Senior Day festivities and a crowd of 1,273.
Â
The score was tied 7-7 until
Jeff Leeson drilled a 3-pointer. After Truman scored,
Josh Montague threw down a dunk, and Leeson's jumper pushed the Saints ahead 14-9. Truman tallied six straight but
Armon Provo's jumper put Maryville back in front.
Trae Pemberton's layup gave the Saints an 18-15 lead. Truman tied the game at 20-20 when used a 14-4 run to go up by double digits. The Bulldogs settled for a 44-31 lead despite Maryville hitting 14-of-25 shots from the field.
Â
Truman's lead grew to 16 before the Saints rallied.
Damyan Stoyanov and Provo hit back-to-back 3-pointers as the Saints cut the gap to 56-49 five minutes after the break. The visitors still led 63-53 until Maryville went on a 14-4 run. Provo hit a jumper, and Pemberton added two free throws. Later, Provo hit two at the line and a deep 3-pointer to pull the Saints to 65-62 with eight minutes to play.
Â
Truman steadily inched back to a 78-66 lead until the Saints went on another late push. A Leeson triple was the first in the run, and Pemberton had a fastbreak layup. Montague hammered in another dunk to draw the Saints to 78-73 with 1:41 to go. However, that would be as close as the Saints (10-15, 5-11 GLVC) would get.
Â
Provo paced the four Saints in double figures with 23 points and added five assists. Montague recorded his second double-double with career highs of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Leeson also notched career bests with 15 points and five assists. Maryville made 32-of-59 shots on the night. Seth Jackson, the GLVC's leading scorer, finished with 29 points to top Truman (18-8, 10-6).
Â
The Saints are next in action Saturday when they travel to Quincy.
