This time there were no late dramatics for the Maryville men's basketball team. The Saints were looking for the season sweep of Quincy, but the Hawks shot 53.2 percent from the field to down the Saints 75-65 in Pepsi Arena Saturday afternoon. The Saints won the first meeting in St. Louis on a Max Mischkulnig tip at the buzzer.

The Saints snared an early lead when Jeff Leeson knocked down a jumper, and Saikou Jallow had a tip-in for a 6-2 edge. Leeson's layup was good for an 8-5 advantage before the Hawks went on a 12-2 run to grab a 17-10 cushion. Damyan Stoyanov converted two layups around one Trae Pemberton free throw, whose missed free throw ended a streak of 21 straight makes at the line, as the Saints closed to 17-15. QU answered with seven consecutive points. The Saints scored the last four points on Pemberton layups to cut Quincy's lead to 29-25 at intermission.

Early in the second half, Pemberton nailed a 3-pointer and added a layup to pull the Saints even at 32-32 two minutes after the break. Quincy scored for a 34-32 lead until the Saints surged ahead on a Josh Montague layup and two free throws. Pemberton continued his hot shooting as his triple handed Maryville a 41-40 margin at the 15:04 mark. The Hawks answered with six consecutive points for a 46-41 lead and eventually took a 51-43 edge. Max Mischkulnig completed a three-point play to trim the deficit to five.

After one Pemberton free throw cut the Quincy lead to 58-52, the Hawks tallied seven straight points to gran their biggest lead of the game. Leeson sank two from the line to end the Maryville drought. Two more free throws by Provo and a hoop by Mischkulnig drew the Saints to 68-58 at the 3:07 mark. However, that would be as close as Maryville would get as Quincy hit eight of 10 free throws in the waning minutes.

Pemberton led four Saints in double figures with 17 points. Armon Provo added 13 points, while Montague topped Maryville with six rebounds.

The Saints slip to 10-16 overall, 5-12 in the GLVC. The Hawks improve 13-14 overall, 7-10 in the league. Maryville closes out the regular season Thursday, Feb. 26, in a contest at city-rival University of Missouri-St. Louis.
