Maryville hosted city-rival University of Missouri-St. Louis Wednesday afternoon at Weber Field, and the schools split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader as the winning team scored nine runs. In the first contest, the Saints posted a 9-6 win while the Tritons took the second game 9-4.
Â
Game one was a slugfest as the squads combined for 15 runs and 26 hits. The Saints struck with three runs in the second. With the bases loaded,
Mitch Carriger scored on an UMSL error for the first run.
Tyler Omlid singled to bring home another run, and
Brad Ridings' fielder's choice pushed the Saints up 3-0. The Tritons tied the game with three runs in the fifth before the Saints answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Ridings singled, stole second and scored on
Kaleb Depew's single up the middle. Carriger doubled down the line in left to bring Depew home. Later,
Mike Wilkinson singled to plate another run, and
Garrett Taylor's double scored another for a 7-4 lead. UMSL got one run back in the sixth but the Saints tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Ridings had his third hit of the day, and
Yoonjae Nam had a base hit that was misplayed and allowed Ridings to come all the way around to score. Nam, who raced all the way to third, then touched home on Depew's RBI single. The Tritons scored two runs in the seventh but
Brandon Downey saved the win for
Scott Pennington.
Â
In the second game, the Tritons scored one run in each of the first two innings but the Saints tied the game in the third.
Tyler Catlett singled and reached second on
Troy Payton's sac bunt. Nam then drilled a ball that nearly left the park but the double scored the first run for the Saints. Depew followed with an RBI single to tie the game. UMSL scored once in the top of the fifth before the Saints took their first lead with two in the home half of the inning. Nam singled and Depew reached on an error to set the table for Wilkinson, who lashed a double to bring both runners home. However, the Tritons scored three runs in the top of the sixth and seventh to rally for the victory.
Â
The Saints are now 11-16 overall, 4-10 in the league. The Tritons stand at 12-7 overall, 7-7 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action Friday, April 3, as it hosts Missouri S&T for a Noon doubleheader.
