Box Score In the final game of the 2015 season, the Maryville baseball team went extra innings and dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker on a wild pitch at Truman State Sunday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo.
Â
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single and a sac bunt to grab an early 2-0 lead. Saints starter
Steven Reynolds settled down and did not give up another run over the next three innings. However, the Saints offense was unable to muster a run. Truman tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth. Maryville finally broke through and tied the game with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Â
Troy Payton started the rally with a double and took third on
Andrew Naegeli's single. Danny Barnett put a ball in play for an RBI ground out but the Bulldogs misplayed the ball for a run. Both Saints runners moved up a base on a balk, and
Sean Murphy came on as a pinch runner. The move was shrewd when
Kaleb Depew singled back up the middle to bring in both runners to forge a 3-3 tie.
Â
The Saints nearly took the lead in the eighth inning but stranded two runners. The game moved into the bottom of the tenth, and Truman worked a walk. After a sac bunt and an infield hit, the Saints intentionally loaded the bases to set up a force out at every base. However, Maryville uncorked a wild pitch to allow Michael Venturella to score the game-winning run for Truman State.
Â
The Saints close out the 2015 season with an overall record of 19-31, 11-25 in the GLVC. Truman State is now 30-18 overall, 21-15 in the league.
