The Maryville men's soccer team narrowly fell short of its third straight victory to open the season when Truman State converted a penalty kick for the game's only goal. The Saints posted two wins to start the year but fell in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener in Kirksville, Mo.
 
Just past the quarter hour, the Bulldogs drew a foul in the box. TSU's Corey Nolte slotted home from the spot for the 1-0 lead. Pontus Gitselov nearly pulled the Saints level four minutes later but his shot was cleared off the line by the TSU defense. After halftime, Kevin Ptacek's shot was saved to keep Maryville down 1-0. Truman had a player sent off as the Saints still were looking for the equalizer. In the final six minutes, Bill Stimac had the best chance to tie the game but was denied as Truman held on for the win.
 
The Saints had eight shots to six for Truman, including just two on frame for the Bulldogs, who improved to 1-2 on the season. Maryville is 2-1 on the year and hosts No. 20 Quincy in the home opener Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
