Despite a goal by
Shannon Foley, Maryville's bid for an upset in its home opener versus No. 6 Quincy fell short as the Hawks held on for a 2-1 win over the Saints.
Â
Allison Birke tallied in the sixth minute to stake Quincy to an early lead.
Ashley Pogue and
Katy Rood earned scoring chances but QU keeper Megan Swanson denied both shots.
Mariah Allen-Harris launched a hard, low shot towards the Hawks' net but the QU defense blocked the ball as the Saints trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Â
In the second half, Gabby Herrick doubled the Hawks' lead in the 70th minute. The Saints carried the play as they looked to get back into the game. After drawing a foul,
Nadia Abu-Douleh lofted a high pass into the Quincy penalty area. Foley ran under the pass and knocked in a header as Maryville pulled one score back. The Saints earned a late corner but were unable to record the late equalizer as the Hawks kept the 2-1 lead to remain unbeaten at 4-0-1 this year, 1-0-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Â
The Saints are 1-2-1 this season, 0-1-1 in the conference. Maryville hosts Indianapolis Friday, Sept. 18, in a 5 p.m. start.
