Saint Joseph's Mark Manda hit a rocket of a shot into the Maryville next with just under four minutes remaining in the second overtime as the Pumas pulled out a 1-0 thriller in Great Lakes Valley Conference Sunday afternoon. The game was the second straight double OT contest for the Saints after they had a scoreless draw against Indianapolis Friday.
Â
Both teams had solid scoring chances in the first half but the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes. Early in the second half,
Nate Alonzo had a shot that hit the left goal post but bounced away. Later,
Erik Schafer took a shot that appeared it might sneak into the left side of the net but the SJC defense blocked the ball at the last second.
Â
In the first overtime, Schafer again had a shot on goal stopped by SJC keeper Adam Whybrow, and
Alex Brown also nearly ended the game with a blast that was deflected by the Puma defense. In the second OT session, Brown again had a good chance to win it for the Saints but his attempt was blocked. However, in the 107th minute, Â Manda collected a pass from Sebastian Quinteros and hit a hard volley that curled into the Saints net for the game-winning goal.
Â
Christian Kjaersgaard came up with four saves, while Whybrow made six saves for SJC (3-2, 2-2 GLVC) in posting the shutout. Maryville slips to 2-4-1 overall, 0-3-1 in the league.
