Gilsinger's Golden Goal Downs Lewis for First Time

Luke Gilsinger scored in the eight minute of overtime to give the Maryville men's soccer team a dramatic 1-0 triumph at Lewis Friday night in Romeoville, Ill. The win is the first for the Saints over the Flyers. Lewis had recorded wins in the first six meetings between the teams but Gilsinger finally ended the Flyers' run.

Neither team had many good scoring chances as the Saints recorded just three on goal, while the Flyers had a mere one shot on target. Gilsinger had the first shot on goal midway through the first half, while Lewis' one shot on goal occurred late in the first half but was saved by Maryville keeper Christian Kjaersgaard.

In the second half, Maryville had a header by Ryan Schlick turned away. Lewis had three good chances in the final minutes but the game was extended into overtime.  Lewis had a shot blocked in the opening minutes to set the stage for the golden goal by Maryville. Erik Schafer crossed the ball in from the left, and Gilsinger's shot from the far right side of cage found the back of the net for the game-winning goal.  Kjaersgaard recorded his third clean sheet of the season to backstop the victory.

The Saints, who played in their third straight overtime time, improve to 3-4-1, 1-3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers drop to 0-6-1, 0-4-1 in the league. Maryville returns to the pitch Sunday as the Saints head to Wisconsin-Parkside.
