Maryville's women's soccer team peppered the Lewis goal with 20 shots, including 11 on target, but was denied a victory when the Flyers scored the game's only goal early in the second half in a 1-0 win over the Saints. Maryville outshot Lewis 20 to 6, including 11-3 on goal, but Flyers' keeper Jennifer Meyer came up with all 11 saves for the win.
The Saints carried the early play as Mariah Allen-Harris and Hana McGinis had back-to-back shots saved by the Flyers. Lewis had its best chance midway through the half but Maryville goalie Bailey Doerflinger, making her first start of the year, turned the shot aside. Shannon Foley had a good scoring opportunity saved, while the Flyers were denied a score when they rang an attempt off the crossbar. The game was still deadlocked at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.
Lewis had an early scoring chance saved by Doerflinger, but the Flyers finally scored when Elena Cukurs found the back of the net in the 50th minute of play. The Saints pressed for the equalizer as McGinis and Katy Rood had consecutive shots saved. In a late flurry, Allison Verville had two shots blocked, and the Saints final chance by Nadia Abu-Douleh was saved in the waning minutes.
The Saints now stand at 3-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers up their mark to 5-2-1, 3-1-1 in the conference. Maryville is back in action Sunday as it heads to Wisconsin-Parkside.
