McGinis Nets Game Winner as Saints Rally Past Rangers 4-3

Hana McGinis scored the game's final two goals as the Maryville women's soccer team put on a furious second-half rally and posted a 4-3 victory at Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday afternoon. The victory was the first for the Saints over the Rangers. UWP had won the first six meetings and the Saints had scored one goal in those previous meetings.

The Rangers grabbed the early lead with a goal in the 19th minute of play. Amanda Wiechens drew the Saints level just over a minute later when she converted off an assist from Nadia Abu-Douleh. However, Vianey Hernandez put UWP back ahead in the 28th minute for a 2-1 edge. Less than two minutes after halftime, Hernandez extended the Rangers' lead with her second score for a 3-1 margin for the home side. That set the stage for the dramatic comeback by the Saints.

Shannon Foley pulled one score back for the Saints as she converted another via an assist by Abu-Douleh in the 55th minute. Just past the hour mark, McGinis collected a pass from Wiechens and scored on a stunning bicycle kick to pull the Saints level. The stage was set for Maryville to complete rally. Rachel Wiesehan pushed a pass through to McGinis who, from outside the box, chipped the UWP goalie for the game-winning goal in the 79th minute of play. The Saints defense did not allow another shot by the Rangers to reach keeper Bailey Doerflinger who made six saves on the day.

The Saints improve to 4-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rangers drop to 2-5-1 overall, 1-4-1 in the league. Maryville is next in action Friday as it hosts Missouri S&T.
