The Maryville volleyball team looked to snap Lewis' nine-match winning streak but the Flyers kept the Saints at bay to hold on for a 3-1 victory Friday night in Moloney Arena. Lewis won by scores of 25-21, 16-25, 25-15, 27-25.
The Saints used a quick 3-0 run to take an 11-6 lead early in set one. Maryville pushed the edge to as many as six at 13-7 but the Flyers scored seven of the next eight points to tie things up at 14-14. The set was closed and was tied at 19-all. Lewis pushed ahead and led 21-20 but scored four of the last five points to win the set.
In set two, the Saints hit a match-best .462 to tie the match. The Saints stretched a 7-6 edge to 11-7 and never gave up the lead. Maryville put things away with three straight points to take an 18-11 advantage and closed out the set as the Saints defense forced Lewis to hit just .238.
The Flyers had their best hitting set in the third as they cruised to a 25-15 win while hitting .423. The Saints trailed in the fourth set 7-6 but reeled off five straight points to jump ahead. Lewis slowly inched back and got as close as 14-13. The Saints scored four straight to retake an 18-13 margin. Maryville's lead stood at 19-14 but the Flyers answered with six consecutive points to take a one-point lead. The teams traded points and the Saints pulled ahead 25-24. Unfortunately, Lewis scored three straight to close out the match.
Ashley Selmon led the Saints with 14 kills and hit .591 for the match with just one error on 22 swings.
Laura Welling added 12 kills, while
Maddie Timmermann chipped in 11 kills and three blocks.
Hana Michael finished with 12 digs, and
Taryn Trubich amassed 36 assists. Alexis Davito led Lewis with a match-high 19 kills while hitting .533.
The Saints slip to 5-6 overall, 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers stretch their winning streak to 10 and improve to 11-1 overall, 3-0 in the league. Maryville hosts Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday in a 3 p.m. match.
