The Maryville volleyball team made late charges in each set against visiting Wisconsin-Parkside but the Rangers held the Saints off each time to post a 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-21) victory Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena.
Set one was close most of the way and featured 15 ties and eight lead changes. UWP led 8-5 before the Saints scored four straight to take the lead.
Maddie Timmermann started the run with a kill, and after two errors by the Rangers,
Zoe Zeiter's kill gave Maryville a 9-8 advantage. UWP eventually tied the set and took a two-point edge. The teams traded points and were still tied at 21. The Rangers tallied two straight points, and the Saints tied the game at 23-all. UWP's Jackie Langer recorded two straight kills to close the set 25-23.
In set two, the Rangers jumped out to an early lead before the Saints made a furious charge. UWP took a 22-15 advantage until Timmermann had a kill and teamed with
Hana Michael on a block. After a UWP hitting error,
Taylor Luebbers served an ace to draw the Saints to 22-18. The Rangers finally scored a point but the Saints ripped off a 5-0 run. Timmermann started the run with a kill, and after an UWP error, she served up an ace.
Ashley Selman and Zeiter had a block, and another ace by Timmermann forged a 23-23 tie. The Rangers scored to reach set point until Selman saved it with a kill. The Rangers eventually had two kills to hold on for a 26-24 win.
The Saints took a 5-4 cushion in set three after a Luebbers ace but the Rangers answered with four straight points to take the lead. Selman's kill halted the UWP run but the visitors tacked on another three straight points. The Saints made a mini run on a UWP hitting error, a Timmermann kill and a block by
Taryn Trubich and Timmermann to close to 15-11. Down 21-14, the Saints scored five of the next seven points to get as close as 23-19. The Saints saved two match points after
Laura Welling posted a solo block and a kill but the Rangers held on for a 25-21 win.
Timmermann led the Saints with 11 kills and five blocks, while Ali Lampen recorded 21 digs. Langer led the Rangers with 24 kills, and Meghan Conley posted a match-high 25 digs.
The Saints fall to 5-7 on the season, 1-3 in the GLVC. Wisconsin-Parkside improves to 8-5, 2-2 in the conference. Maryville is back in action Thursday, Oct. 1, as the Saints host Oakland City in a nonconference match.
