Lewis boxscore in PDF Forrester Sims and
Marvin Grant-Clark combined to score 39 points but a balanced Lewis offense shot 54.5 percent to hand Maryville a 71-58 defeat at Moloney Arena. The Flyers put four players in double figures to offset the Saints scoring duo.
Sims drained a 3-pointer on Maryville's first possession for an early 3-0 lead but Lewis scored four straight to take its first lead. The Flyers held a 6-5 edge until
Max Mischkulnig hit a short jumper in the lane to give Maryville a 7-6 lead. Lewis scored the next seven points to grab the lead before Grant-Clark stopped the run for the Saints. The Flyers continued their burst and used an 8-2 run to build a double-digit lead at 21-11. Maryville answered the Lewis run with seven consecutive points. Sims scored on a layup, and
Damyan Stoyanov drained a 3-pointer and hit a runner to pull the Saints to 21-18. Lewis answered with its own 7-0 run and eventually settled for a 42-30 lead at halftime. The Flyers shot 58.6 percent in the opening half.
The Flyers were still up 46-32 early in the second half until Grant-Clark splashed a triple, and
Karson King scored on a layup to pull the Saints to single digits at 46-37. The Saints did not allow the Flyers to pull away and cut the Lewis to nine on a Grant-Clark jumper. Lewis would take a 59-44 lead before Maryville made one late run. Grant-Clark and Sims sank back-to-back 3-pointers as the Saints closed to 59-50 with 10:24 to play in the game. Maryville was still down nine after a Saikou Jallow tip-in with eight minutes to play but the Flyers kept the Saints at bay for the win.
Sims hit 7-of-10 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, and finished with a game-high 20 points. Grant-Clark added three treys and finished with 19 points. King topped Maryville with six rebounds. The Saints held Max Strus to 14 points, eight below his season average, but Miles Simelton had 14 points and two other Lewis players reached double figures in scoring. Lewis (11-4, 3-2 GLVC) finished the night shooting 54.5 percent from the field.
The Saints (7-9, 1-5 GLVC) are next in action Saturday when they host Wisconsin-Parkside in a 3 p.m. tip Saturday, Jan. 16.
