Rensselaer, IN. –
Christian Kjaersgaard garnered his fourth straight shutout as the Saints men's soccer team edged Saint Joseph's College 1-0 in Rensselaer, IN Friday evening. The four consecutive shutout victories tie a mark that was set back in October of 1990.
The two clubs played in a defensive battle until senior
Kevin Doherty scored his second goal of the year off a pass from
Rasmus Tauts in the 41
st minute to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage. Maryville out-shot the Pumas 14-3 in the first half.
Saint Joseph's (1-11-0, 1-9-0 GLVC) attempted to score the equalizing goal in the second half by out-shooting Maryville 9-5, but the Saints defense held on to grab the road victory.
Kjaersgaard anchored the Maryville defense by making a pair of saves to earn his fifth shutout of the year. The shutout also moved Kjaersgaard into a tie for second place on the career shutout list, tying the Late Joel Roschnafsky who accomplished the feat from 1998-2000.
Maryville (9-5-0, 6-5-0 GLVC) returns to action Sunday, Oct. 16, as the Saints travel to Indianapolis to take on the University of Indianapolis. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. central time.
