Helmut Florencia scored late in regulation to force overtime, but the Saints men's soccer team fell to the University of Indianapolis 2-1 Sunday at Key Stadium in Indianapolis.
The Greyhounds scored the first goal of the day on a Javier Steinwascher goal in the 20
th minute to give UIndy a 1-0 lead. This was the first goal that the Saints surrendered since Oct. 2. UIndy outshot Maryville 6-3 in the first stanza.
Florencia scored the equalizer in the 78
th minute as he headed in a cross from
Sander Heieren from six yards out to knot things up at 1-1. Florencia's goal was his team leading seventh of the year. Maryville had a few chances in the later stages of the match to take the lead, but Heieren placed a shot that went wide and
Chris Naunheim had a chance blocked to force the extra period.
Jake Meyer scored the game winner for the Greyhounds (7-4-3, 5-4-3 GLVC) in the 96
th minute as he directed a ball that deflected off several players that just got past Saints goalkeeper
Christian Kjaersgaard.
Maryville (9-6-0, 6-6-0 GLVC) returns to action Friday, Oct. 21, as the Saints travel to Quincy to take on the Quincy University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
