Quincy, Ill. – The Maryville men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Quincy University in a hard fought battle Friday night in Quincy.
Quincy (9-4-2, 7-4-2 GLVC) struck first in the 22
nd minute as Scott Ladi drilled a header from five yards out to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Saints battled back as
Pontus Gitselov scored his sixth goal of the year to tie the match up at 1-1 in the 33
rd minute. The Hawks out-shot Maryville 7-3 in the half while Maryville net minder
Christian Kjaersgaard garnered four saves in the first stanza.
Quincy had a golden opportunity to in the 54
th minute to take the lead, but a free kick hit the cross bar and was cleared away by the Maryville defense. The Hawks continued to apply pressure on the Maryville defense and took the lead in the 62
nd minute on an Eddie Piesha goal from 13-yards out to make the score 2-1. The Saints had numerous chances late in the affair, but could not break through.
Maryville (9-7-0, 6-7-0 GLVC) returns to pitch on Sunday, Oct. 23, as the Saints take on Truman State on Senior Day at Maryville Field. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
