UMSL Rallies Past Saints in Five Sets

Despite Allison Lakin's third straight double-double, the Maryville volleyball team dropped a five-setter as visiting University of Missouri-St. Louis rallied for a 3-2 victory (20-25, 25-22, 14-25, 25-18, 15-9). Lakin finished with 15 kills and 10 digs to pace the Maryville attack.

Up 3-2 in set one, the Saints surged ahead with a 5-0 run. Lakin had a kill to start the run, followed by one by Kara Wright. The duo combined on a block, and Lakin put down back-to-back kills for an 8-2 lead. The Tritons used a 4-0 to get to 11-8 but the Saints scored three of the next four points to steady themselves. UMSL went on a 3-0 burst before the Saints answered with a 4-0 run to take control.

The Tritons hit .386 in set two to even the match. The score was tied three times, the last when consecutive kills by Ashley Selman and Zoe Zeiter put the score at 22-22. However, the Tritons scored the final three points. The Saints dominated in set three by hitting a sparkling .560 and cruised to a 2-1 lead. The Saints were down 10-9 before a kill by Emma Basler was the first of eight straight points before Maryville cruised to the win. UMSL hit at a .433 clip to force a fifth set.

The fifth set saw four ties and four lead changes before UMSL took control late. The Saints used a kill by Wright to tie the set and an UMSL error gave the Saints a 2-1 lead. The Tritons scored three straight before Lakin put down a kill. Wright followed with a kill to tie the set, and Maryville went up 5-4 on an UMSL miscue. The Tritons tallied four straight before a Basler kill cut the UMSL lead to 8-6. The Tritons held an 11-8 lead before Selman finished a point to pull the Saints to 11-9. However, the Tritons tallied four straight to cap their rally.

Lakin hit .333 en route to her double-double, and Selman added 13 kills, hit .545 with five blocks. Basler erupted for a season-best 12 kills along with four blocks. Maggie Murphy notched a season-high 20 digs to lead the Saints (2-14, 1-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference) defense. UMSL (10-4, 5-2 GLVC) put five players in double figure kills.

The Saints continue their homestand Friday when they host Truman State for a 7 p.m. match.
