St. Louis -
Helmut Florencia started the scoring early in the first half and the Maryville men's soccer team got an insurance goal in the second half as the Saints grabbed a 2-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin - Parkside Friday afternoon at Maryville Field.
Sander Heieren found Florencia in the middle of the box as he drilled a shot into the lower right corner of the goal to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. The goal would be Florencia's fifth of the season. The Saints went on to outshoot the Rangers 6-2 in the first stanza as Maryville controlled the pace of play throughout the half.
Erik Schafer scored his first career goal as Heieren found him on the back post in the 53rd minute to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. The Rangers (5-5-1, 3-5-1 GLVC) had a chance to cut into the Saints lead, but
Christian Kjaersgaard made an outstanding save on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to preserve the two-goal lead.
Maryville (6-5-0, 3-5-0 GLVC) returns to the pitch this Sunday, Oct. 9, as the Saints will play host to Lewis at Maryville Field. Start time is set for 2:30 p.m.
