Grant Sims Scores Career-High 24 Points to Power Saints Past Fontbonne

- Grant Sims poured in a career-high 24 points to pace the Maryville men's basketball team to an 86-56 romp over Fontbonne Saturday night at Moloney Arena. Sims knocked down 9-of-12 shots from the field to lead the Saints to their highest point total of the early season.
 
The early portion of the game was close and the visiting Griffins took a 15-13 lead at the 11:54 mark. The Saints seized control of the game with a 12-0 run and never surrendered the lead again. Sims tied the game on a layup and hit a short jumper to give the Saints a 17-15 lead. Jeff Leeson made one free throw before Damyan Stoyanov scored inside. After two Marvin Grant-Clark free throws, Sims sank a charity toss and a basket for a 25-15 lead. The Saints held Fontbonne scoreless for nearly eight minutes. The Griffins finally scored at the 4:49 mark. Maryville still led 32-21 but closed the half on a 9-1 burst. Sukhman Bhinder drilled a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for a 41-22 advantage.
 
In the second half, the Saints kept a comfortable edge and still led by 17 at 50-33 four minutes in. Maryville put the game away with a 9-2 run. Forrester Sims had a steal and cruised in for a layup and later knocked down a 3-pointer. Fontbonne made a basket before Anthony Johnson swiped the ball and eased in for a layup. Stoyanov's layup pushed the Saints up to a 59-35 lead. Maryville built its edge to as much as 25 with seven minutes to go and salted the game away.
 
Evan Booker scored 16 points and matched his career best with nine rebounds. Bhinder harassed the Fontbonne offense and came up with six steals on the night. Kris McCann led Fontbonne with 20 points.
 
The Saints pick up their first victory of the season and are now 1-4. The game was the official season opener for Fontbonne. Maryville is next in action Tuesday as it hits the road to face Trevecca Nazarene.
