St. Louis - The Maryville men's basketball team had the potential game-winning layup spin out with five seconds left in the game as the University of Missouri-St. Louis edged the Saints 66-62 Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena. The loss spoiled a 12-rebound performance by
Nick Miller, the most by a Maryville player this season.

Down 63-62, the Saints ran a play on the right side of the lane, and the ball appeared that it was about to drop, but the shot spun out. The Tritons sank two free throws with three seconds to play and tacked on one more with 0.1 seconds remaining for the final score.

The Saints shot 57.1 percent in the first half but the Tritons were nearly as good at 52 percent as UMSL led 34-29 at the break. Suhkman Bhinder scored on a layup, and
Anthony Johnson knocked down a jumper as the Saints cut the gap to 34-33. The Tritons kept a single-digit lead and pushed the edge back to 44-37 with 14 minutes to play. The Saints trimmed the deficit to 48-46 on a 9-4 run. USML pushed the edge back to 55-48 before the Saints scored seven straight to tie the game.
Damyan Stoyanov hit two free throws, and
Grant Sims sank a pull up jumper in the lane.
Karson King forged a tie at 55-55 with a 3-pointer with 4:48 left.

The Tritons went back up 59-55 before Maryville took its first lead of the second half.
Jeff Leeson drilled a triple from the wing, and two free throws by Grant Sims gave the Saints a 60-59 edge. The teams traded free throws before a layup by UMSL's Joseph English gave the visitors a 63-62 lead to set up the final frantic seconds.

Forrester Sims finished with a game-high 19 points to aid the 12 board by Miller who also added eight points on 4-of-5 shooting. Grant Sims handed out eight rebounds. The Saints (3-9, 0-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference) shot 50 percent from the field (22-of-44). D.J. White topped the Tritons (7-4, 2-1 GLVC) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
