St. Louis – The Maryville men's basketball team ended 2016 on a high note as the Saints defeated Principia College 83-73 Saturday afternoon in the Simon Center. The win extended the Saints winning streak to three games.
Maryville got off to a slow start in the first four minutes of the contest, but went on an 18-4 run over an eight-minute stretch midway through the half to take a 23-12 lead with eight minutes left in the opening 20 minutes.
Grant Sims paced the Saints during the burst with eight points. The Panthers cut into the Saints lead with a 16-9 span of their own over the final six minutes of the half to give Maryville a 35-30 lead heading into the break.
The Saints put the game out reach in the second half with a 17-5 run over a six-minute period that was powered by
Forrester Sims who scored 11 of his 15 points during the span that gave Maryville a 68-46 advantage.
Grant Sims finished the day with a team-high 17 points and six assists while
Evan Booker added 12 markers, and
Jimmy Barton chipped in with 11 points.
Karson King snagged seven rebounds to pace the Saints on the boards while Booker grabbed six caroms. Principia (3-6) was led by Adaku Anumu with 33 points on 11-of-21 shooting.
Maryville (6-9, 0-3 GLVC) returns to action Thursday, Jan. 5, as the Saints take on Saint Joseph's College in a Great Lakes Valley Conference tilt. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
