Springfield, Mo. - The Maryville men's basketball team shot 52 percent at No. 15 Drury but the Panthers used a big run to open the second half to down the Saints 103-68. Karson King paced the Saints with a career-high 17 points.
The Saints took their first lead of the game on a King free throw. Drury went up 7-5 before an Anthony Johnson layup tied the game at 7-all. The Panthers went back ahead after they scored 11 straight points. King got the Saints back on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer. The Saints inched back into the game, and Damyan Stoyanov's 3-pointer cut the deficit to 25-22.
Drury extended its lead to 32-24 before the Saints answered with a 10-2 run. Grant Sims started the burst with a 3-pointer, and Johnson scored on a layup. Forrester Sims answered a Drury triple with his own from beyond the arc, and two Grant Sims free throws brought the Saints to 35-34. However, Drury kept the lead and took a 48-41 led into intermission.
The Panthers started the second half with a rush and tallied the first 15 points. Jeff Leeson finally scored to get the Saints on the board. Maryville was unable to put together a run and never got the deficit to single figures. King hit 7-of-8 shots and made two 3-pointers in his best offensive outing. Johnson and Grant Sims both tallied 15 points apiece. The Saints converted 26 of their 50 shots but the Panthers blazed the nets at 60.3 percent. Drury put six players in double figures.
The Saints fall to 2-8, 0-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Panthers remain unbeaten and move to 7-0, 2-0 in the league. Maryville is next in action Tuesday, Dec. 6, as it hosts Robert Morris-Springfield.
